Ricardo Basbaum

Ricardo Basbaum (b. 1961) is a Brazilian artist that lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. Artist and writer, investigates art as an intermediating device and platform for the articulation between sensorial experience, sociability and language. Since the late 1980s, has been nurturing a vocabulary specific to his work, applying it in a particular way to each new project.

Recent solo-projects include the production of the artist as a collective conversation  (Audain Gallery, Vancouver), nbp-etc: escolher linhas de repetição  (Galeria Laura Alvim, Rio de Janeiro), Diagramas  (Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Santiago de Com-postela, 2013) and re-projecting (london)  (The Showroom, London, 2013). Exhibited at documenta 12 (2007). His work was recently included at the 20ª Sydney Biennial (2016), The School of Kyiv – Kyiv Biennial  2015 (The House of Clothes, Kyiv), It Might be Possible that the World Itself is Without Meaning* – Performances, ac-tions, and interventions in urban space (Stadtkuratorin, Hamburg, 2015), A Singular Form  (Secession, Vienna, 2014), Disparité et Demande  (La Galerie, Noisy-le-Sec, 2014), the 30º São Paulo Biennalle (2012), Garden of Learning  (Busan, 2012) and Counter-Production  (Generali, Vienna, 2012), among other events. Curatorial projects include On Difference#2  (co-curator, Kunstverein Stuttgart, Germany, 2006), Pogovarjanja/Conver-sations/Conversas  (with Bojana Piškur, Skuc Gallery, Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2006), Panorama da Arte Brasileira  (co-curator, Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, 2001) and Mistura + Confronto  (Central Elétrica do Freixo, Oporto, Portugal, 2001). Artist in residency at the Audain Gallery (Vancouver) in October 2014. ). His pro-duction of diagrams is collected in the book Diagrams, 1994 – ongoing  (Errant Bodies Press, 2016). He is the author of Manual do artista-etc  (Azougue, 2013), Ouvido de corpo, ouvido de grupo  (Universidade Nacional de Córdoba, 2010) and Além da pureza visual  (Zouk, 2007). Professor at the Instituto de Artes e Comunicação Social, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói. Worked at the Instituto de Artes, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (1998-2016) and as Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago (2013).
