Claire de Santa Coloma

Claire de Santa Coloma (b. 1983) is an Argentinian artist currently living in Lisbon, Portugal. Claire’s practice is primarily sculpture based but it also includes drawings and compositions on paper. Her practice is a response to her physical environment, framed within time and space.

The focus of her work is always the very idea of sculpture itself, its possibilities of material realisation and how we relate to it. She employs certain affinities with the universe of twentieth-century abstract sculpture. Torsion, balance, weight, display are some of the formal themes present throughout the history of western sculpture that she constantly addresses and applies.

The relationship created between the spectator and the object is an important layer of reading into her work, as the interplay between the compositions and the scenarios in which the work is presented are of fundamental importance. The economy of a place and its context are part of her interventions.

Claire was the recipient of the prestigious EDP Foundation’s New Artists Award in 2017.
